Difference between stainless steel, and steel
Stainless steel and steel are two types of metallic materials with different properties and characteristics. The following are the main differences between the two:
- Chemical composition: Steel is an alloy of iron, while stainless steel contains iron, carbon, and chromium. The presence of chromium gives stainless steel its resistance to corrosion.
- Crystal structure: Stainless steel has a face-centered cubic crystal structure, while steel generally has a ferritic or pearlitic crystalline structure depending on the carbon content.
- Corrosion resistance: Stainless steel offers superior corrosion resistance compared to carbon steel. This is due to the presence of chromium in the chemical composition of stainless steel, which is sufficient in preventing rust under typical room-temperature atmospheric conditions.
